The bird Dziu legend Maya

Have out there one morning, Chaac, Lord of Rain, felt like walking and would walk the fields of the Mayab. Chaac left very happy, sure he would find strong and grown crops, but just came to see them, their surprise was great, because he found that plants were weak and tired and dry land. Realizing that the crops would be very poor, Chaac was very concerned. After thinking for a while, he found a solution: burn all the crops and the land would recover its wealth and new plantings would be good.

After making that decision, Chaac asked one of his servants to call all the birds of the Mayab. The first to arrive was the Dziu, a bird with colorful feathers and brown eyes. Barely he settled into a branch when he came hastily toh, a black bird whose main attraction was its long tail full of beautiful feathers. The toh hit the front, where everyone could see it.

Gradually other birds gathered, then Chaac said:

? The I sent because I need them as important commission, which it determines the existence of life. Very soon I burn the fields and want you saved the seeds of all plants, since that is the only way to sow new crops to be better in the future. I trust you; get out soon, because the fire is about to begin.

As Chaac finished speaking he thought the bird Dziu:

? I'll get the corn seed; I think it's one of the most important for there to be life.

And while the Toh bird said:

Do I have to save the seed corn, all will envy me if I find me first.

Thus, the two birds would get about the same time, but toh saw and wanted Dziu ahead; then he passed through on his way and pushed him to go first. At Dziu did not care and went quietly, but very determined to achieve their goal.

The Toh flew so fast that in a short time and took them far ahead of their peers. Almost he reached the fields, but he was very tired and said:

? I'll take a break. At last I'll already arrived and others have yet to come away.

So he toh lays on a sidewalk. As he was just going to rest but inadvertently fell asleep and did not even notice that it was beginning to get dark and under its tail had been crossed on the way. The Toh was already fast asleep, when many birds that could not fly went by and as the bird not seen in the darkness, he stepped on the tail.

Feeling the stomping, the Toh woke up, and what was his surprise to see that there was only one tail feather. I had no idea what had happened, but thought of going for the corn seed for birds see their value and did not notice in his bald tail.

Meanwhile, the other birds had arrived to crops. Most took the seed that was closer, because the fire was very intense. And they had saved nearly all, just missing the corn. The Dziu flew desperate for cornfields, but there was so much smoke that I could not see them. In that, Toh arrived, but when he saw the huge flames, forgot corn and decided to take a seed that did not offer much danger. Then he flew to the tomato plant, where the fire was not yet very intense and saved seeds.

Instead, the Dziu did not care that the fire will burn the wings; finally found the cornfields, and with great courage, went to them and took in its beak a few grains of corn.

The toh could not help but admire the courage of Dziu and went to congratulate him. Then the two birds realized they had changed: toh eyes were no longer black, but green tomato as saved, and you were Dziu gray wings and red eyes, because he got too close to the fire.

Chaac and birds failed to recognize the feat of Dziu, so they met to find ways to reward. And it was precisely the Toh, ashamed of his conduct, who proposed that he be given a special right to Dziu:

? Since the Dziu did something for us, now we must do something for him. I propose that as of today, to lay their eggs in the nest of any bird and we promise to care as our own.

The birds agreed and since then the Dziu not worry about making your home or care for their offspring. Only shouts his name when choosing a watch birds nest and his case was the chosen one, willing to fulfill its promise.
